VEC EDUCATION PLAN

Coláiste Chraobh Abhann is privileged to be chosen as the venue for the launch of County Wicklow VEC’s Education Plan 2006-2010.  The plan is being launched on Monday 29th January 2007 by the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Mr. Dick Roche T.D.  The Education Plan 2006-2010 maps the future direction of County Wicklow VEC over the next five years.  It outlines the objectives of the VEC and should result in the provision of an even higher standard of educational service at all levels within the County.

STUDENT COUNCIL

Our Student Council meet every Thursday at lunchtime.  At the meeting last week, Jessica Golden, Chairperson of the Council received an invite to the launch of the VEC Education Plan.  The council is also planning to survey the students in the school on food choices and healthy options.  They will then meet with the owner of our school canteen to discuss the findings of the survey.

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS PROGRAMME

The applications for County Wicklow VEC’s Environmental Awareness programme 2006-2007 have now been submitted.  A total of 12 projects from our school have entered into the competition in each of the 4 categories – Natural, Cultural, Built and Social Environment.  The aim of the programme is to enhance all aspects of the school environment and the students have shown great initiative and innovation in the projects.

WELL DONE

Congratulations to Megan Carroll and Caroline O Grady in 2nd Year who competed in the Wicklow 400 Fashion Competition.  The girls won first prize for their project, which focussed on fashion in the 1960s.  They received a crystal vase and a cheque for €250 for their great efforts.  Well done girls!

FISHING

Last Wednesday, a group of 15 students headed off to Aughrim for an afternoon of fishing.  Unfortunately, the weather was against them and they came back empty-handed, though an enjoyable afternoon was had by all.  The fishing group in the school visit different local places throughout the year, hoping to fill their nets with plenty of fish.

U13 BOYS SOCCER

The 3rd round of the Leinster Boys U13 Cup between Ratoath and Coláiste Chraobh Abhann took place on Tuesday January 16th.  The lads put in a great performance and the score line of 5-0 did not justify their efforts in a match the CCA dominated possession for long periods.  It was only a superb goalkeeping performance from the opposition keeper that prevented the score line from being closer.  Best on the day for CCA were Kyle Corcoran, Peter Burke and Daniel Kavanagh.

U14 BOYS GAELIC

The U14 Boys Gaelic team had a convincing win over Hacketstown in the semi-final of the South Leinster Competition on Wednesday January 17th.  The final score as 8-7 to 1-8.  Top scorers on the day were Matthew Mannix (2-0), Daniel Kavanagh (2-0) and Gary Elliott (2-3).  Man of the Match was Michael Heffernan.  The boys go on to meet Bunclody in the final.  We wish them the best of luck!
