SENIOR GAELIC FOOTBALL FINAL

Coláiste Chraobh Abhann           2-12                                   Coláiste Bhríde   2-9

Pearse’s Park, Arklow, on Bank Holiday Monday, brought down the curtains on our year and indeed on the school playing careers of our sixth years who have given great service and honour to the school over the years.  And it was a fitting finale as this was a wonderful contest between two skilful and committed sides.  The game was tight throughout, with Coláiste Bhríde leading at half-time, by 0-7 to 1-2, having had the benefit of the wind in the first half.  Matthew Gilbert expertly put away a penalty for our goal.  We eliminated the deficit and went ahead towards the end of normal time but despite having injuries, the Carnew team fought on tenaciously and levelled the scoring for full-time.

Great character was shown by both teams in extra time.  We had the benefit of the wind in the first period and made good use of it, scoring 1-2, the goal by substitute Kurt Starke.  In the second period of extra-time, Carnew immediately hit back with a goal but the CCA boys steadied the ship and Conor Byrne had the final say on the scoring with a point.  There were stars throughout the field for CCA.  Goalie Kevin Condon made some vital saves.  Shane Mooney was Man of the Match at full back.  John Halpin and Stuart Power were also excelling in defence.  Matthew Gilbert and Conor Byrne, scoring 1-8 between them, were the cornerstones of this victory at midfield.  Seán Ryder, Christy Power and Kurt Starke were in excellent form in a hard-working attack.

The team and scorers were: Kevin Condon, Michael Heffernan, Shane Mooney, Shane Keogh, Stuart Power, John Halpin, Billy Clarkson, Conor Byrne (0-2), Matthew Gilbert (1-6), Seán Ryder (0-1), Michael Hackett, Christy Power, Colin Odlum (0-1), Gerard Synnott.  Subs on the day were: Kurt Starke (1-1), Shane Magee, Ronan Harding-Downes, Darren Farrell and Rory McNicholas.

Well done to all involved!
