WELCOME BACK
We would like to welcome back all staff and students for the new school year. We hope everyone is well refreshed after the summer holidays and we look forward to a successful year ahead.
SPANISH VISITORS
The staff and students at Coláiste Chraobh Abhann extend a warm welcome to 20 Spanish students and their leader, who will be spending two weeks at our school. The students are aged between 16 and 18 years old and are attending classes in various subject areas, with the aim of gaining an insight into the Irish education system.
ADULT & COMMUNITY EDUCATION
The Autumn term of our Adult and Community Education programme resumed on Monday September 15th. A wide range of classes are on offer, including Yoga, Computers, Golf, English as a Foreign Language and Painting with Watercolours. HIGHER OPTIONS
Our fifth year students will be attending the Higher Options Conference in Dublin today, September 17th. Students will get the opportunity to talk to representatives from various colleges and courses, which in turn will help them decide on which career path they may like to take in the future.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
The programme of extra-curricular activities is up and running in the school. All students are encouraged to get involved in at least one activity, either sporting or non-sporting. Activities include Camogie, Soccer, Gaelic football for boys and girls, Debating, Fishing and a whole lot more!!
TRANSITION YEAR
The Transition Year students are currently completing a First Aid course. This course is provided by the Irish Red Cross and facilitated by Mr. John Keegan.
JUNIOR CERTIFICATE RESULTS
Congratulations to our students who received their Junior Certificate results last Wednesday. Students did very well in all subjects across the board. Well done!
INFORMATION EVENING
There will be an Information Evening for parents of first year students this Thursday, September 18th at 8p.m. This meeting will be followed by the Parents’ Association AGM at 9p.m.
STAFF MEETING
A reminder to all that classes will finish at 12.35p.m. on Tuesday next, September 23rd. Transport is not guaranteed at this time.
VISITORS FROM SWEDEN
Coláiste Chraobh Abhann was delighted to welcome a group of Swedish visitors yesterday, Tuesday September 16th. The group were given presentations on various aspects of the school and were also brought on a tour of the school, stopping off at areas of interest to their visit and/or subject areas, including computers, woodwork, metalwork, art and home economics.
WELL DONE
Congratulations to Patrick Costello and Seán Ryder who had a very successful summer on the athletics scene. Patrick came second in the 100m at All-Ireland club level. As part of the Irish Celtic team, he went on to come third in the 100m relay in Stirling.
Seán won gold in the Javelin at club level. He then won gold in Javelin on the Schools Leinster team. He then participated in Bedford on the Irish Schools Team and came sixth at International level. Well done to both of them!
LEAVING CERTIFICATE APPLIED
This week the Leaving Certificate Applied 6th year group received their results for Session 2 of their course. Overall students scored very well with a number of students scoring full marks in their interview assessed tasks.
On Thursday last, 5th year LCA students and parents were invited to an information evening at the school outlining the activities for the year ahead. Such activities will include a coffee morning in aid of a charity of the students’ choice and a trip away to an adventure centre next month.
