LEAVING CERTIFICATE APPLIED
Best wishes to our fifth year Leaving Certificate Applied students who are currently on two weeks’ work experience.
They have also spent some time learning sign language, and recently entered into the “Lost in Translation” competition, through which they show their support for those competing in the 21st Deaflympics in Taiwan.
DEBATING CLUB
Congratulations to the Transition Year students who took part in the Trinity College Philosophical Society debates on Tuesday February 23rd. A special congratulation to Joseph Bradley who made it through to the semi-finals.
DRAMA SOCIETY
Last Saturday evening, February 28th, Coláiste Chraobh Abhann won first prize in the Arklow Drama Festival, winning the Gerard Hudson memorial trophy for their production of “I Do Not Like Thee Dr. Fell” by Bernard Farrell. The play is a black comedy about a group therapy session, where finding the ‘inner you’ can be more dangerous than you think. The Coláiste Chraobh Abhann players entered the competition under the direction of Mr O Súilleabháin. The students came from 2nd, 4th and 5th year. The actors were Sam Stafford, Ciara Corcoran, Rosie Murray, Michael Gaffney, Dylan Meehan and Amy Meagher. As well as winning the best play award, Sam Stafford won best actor for his portrayal of Joe. The judges said that they hoped he continued acting as they saw a very bright career ahead of him. The play also won best director and the actors Dylan Meehan and Michael Gaffney received highly commended certificates for their portrayals of Peter and Roger. In her comments, Monica Crofton stated that she was highly impressed with the control and range of the actors, saying that ‘the production from the Coláiste Chraobh Abhann players has equaled and even bettered some professional productions I have seen of this play in the past. I couldn’t take my eyes off them. They really nailed it.’
TRANSITION YEAR
Well done to 48 of our Transition Year students who organized a sponsored stay awake in the school on Friday last. The students stayed awake from 8p.m. to 8a.m. following a hard day at school to raise money for the school musical ‘Annie’. Special mention is due to the organizing committee of Caroline O Grady, Niall Byrne, Glenn Hughes and Clodagh Harvey, and the sponsorship committee of Chloe Doyle, Shauna Byrne, Kyla Heffernan, Alison Keenan, Kim Cosgrave and Ellis Brown. We hope to raise €3000 from sponsorship. All students had a great night with activities ranging from discos to soccer tournaments to blind date.
SCHOOL MUSICAL
Students are currently very busy rehearsing for our upcoming school musical ‘Annie’, which is taking place in the Mermaid Arts Centre Bray next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evening, March 11th, 12th and 13th. Tickets are still available and can be purchased from the Mermaid Arts Centre.
