Coláiste Chraobh Abhannn

Wicklow and Bray People weekly School Report

SENIOR CAMOGIE

Our Senior Camogie team played their first match of the year against Coláiste Bhride from Carnew last Wednesday in Kilcoole.  Although the result didn't go our way there were some impressive passages of play from our team, in particular from Jessica Morrissey and Aisling McCabe at mid-field, Emma Peppard, Lisa Hanlon and Jordan Diskin in the backs and captain Naomi Meakin in the goal.  The team as a whole showed great potential and it promises to be an exciting year for camogie.  Training continues on the school pitch on Wednesday afternoons for Juniors and Seniors from 2-3.

FIRST YEAR GIRLS FOOTBALL

There will be a blitz for first year girls this Wednesday in Kilcoole GAA at 12p.m.  Best wishes girls!

U19 BOYS SOCCER

Our Under-19 Boys played St. Davids Greystones in the Wicklow League and won 3-0.  The goal scorers on the day were Gary Elliott (2) and Ciaran Byrne.  Man of the Match was Danny Keane.  Well done lads!

U14 BOYS GAELIC FOOTBALL

The Under-14 Gaelic Football boys travelled to Carnew last week where they came up against a superb Carnew team. Despite the physical advantage that the Carnew boys had over CCA, the CCA footballers never gave up and showed tremendous character up until the final whistle. Owen O'Brien was the deserved man-of-the-match with a tremendous defensive display in the full back position. Lee Dutton in mid-field and Gavin Dunne at wing-back also put in very impressive performances. Final Score: Carnew 3-11 to CCA 1-3.

PRIVATE MEMBERS DRAW

The Parent’s Council have organised the annual Private Members' Draw as a fundraiser with proceeds being used to improve staff and student services at the school.  To date the money raised has been used to purchase a vast array of equipment and materials, as well as supporting the efforts of many staff in the area of extra-curricular activities.  The first of ten draws takes place on Wednesday 18th November at 9.00am.  Tickets are €20 and are available from the school.  For more information, visit www.colaisteca.ie.

TRANSITION YEAR

Our Transition Year are into the final week of their two week period of Work Experience.  One student, Dietlind Schindl from Austria, is completing her work experience in the school, giving her a great insight into Irish secondary school life.

10 of our Transition Year students are currently completing the Young Whistlers’ Refereeing course at the moment.

All TY students recently went to Dublin to see ‘Psycho Spaghetti’, a one-man comedy show by Mr. Ger Carey, which gives an insightful interpretation into the workings of the teenage mind.

FIRST YEAR TRIP

Last Friday our First Year students spent the day in Glendalough.  While there, they completed the 10km ‘Spinc’ walk, in what was a most enjoyable day.  Thankfully, the weather was perfect for walking.  The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all students.  Many thanks to Mr. Maher for organising the trip, and to the teachers and tutors who helped out on the day.

VISITORS FROM HOLLAND

Last Wednesday, October 14th, the school welcomed 12 visitors from Noordeport in Holland, who are on the Leonardo da Vinci programme.  They took in a tour of the school and were also given presentations on Transition Year and Leaving Certificate Applied by Ms. Driver and Ms. McCormack respectively.  Special thanks to three students, Dietlind Schindl, Ross Reynolds and Kyle Martin who presented with both teachers on each of the programmes.
