DEBATING
Congratulations to our Debating team who came very close to winning their first ever debate last Thursday, October 18th against St. David’s Secondary School Greystones. The motion for the debate was ‘Car-free days are just a gimmick’, and was part of the Wicklow County Council Environmental Debating Competition. Our team put forward some very strong arguments opposing the motion, in what was a very interesting and close-fought contest.
U16 BOYS BASKETBALL
Our U16 Boys Basketball team played against Avondale Community College on Monday last, October 22nd. The boys put in a very good performance but unfortunately lost out in the end, with the final score being 18-8. The members of the squad were: Peter Scales, Conor Verbruggen, Nick Smith, Finbarr Howell, Kurt Starke, Eadbhard Butler, Shane Magee, Philip Swords, Jason Roche, Darren Byrne and Cathal O Sullivan.
U16 SOCCER
Our U16 Boys Soccer team had a victorious win over Dublin Oak on Thursday last, October 18th, as part of the Wicklow/Wexford league. All squad members put in a great performance on the day, ending the game on a final score of 4-1. Scorers on the day for Coláiste Chraobh Abhann were Matthew Gilbert, Seán Ryder, Conor Byrne and Gary Elliott. Man of the match was Seán Ryder. Well done to all involved!
FIRST YEAR TRIP
All first year students are going to Glendalough on Friday, October 26th. The day, which is a team-building event, involves a walking tour of Glendalough, where students will be told about the history of the area and other interesting facts. We hope all students enjoy the day.
WICKLOW LEAGUE ATHLETICS
On Wednesday last, Coláiste Chraobh Abhann had a very successful day at the Wicklow Cross Country competition. Winners on the day were Aisling McCabe, who came first in the girls’ competition, Sarah Kavanagh, who came fifth, and Ronan Marah, who came first in the boys’ competition. Well done to all involved!
COMPETITIONS
Students are encouraged to write a poem or short story on the theme of Halloween. These can be in Irish or English and must be submitted before the end of the week. Judging will take place over the midterm.
Calling all 15-18 year olds! A journalism competition is being run for students aged between 15 and 18 years. They must write 1000 words on the subject of ‘Ireland’s Healthcare System’. The prizes range from €150-€200. Entries must be given to Ms. Kennedy on or before November 11th.
MIDTERM
A reminder to all that our midterm break is from Monday October 29th to Friday November 2nd inclusive.
